How to Store Your Olive Oil

January 7, 2020

If you purchase a bottle of high-quality olive oil, you’ll want to keep it as fresh as possible for as long as possible. So many people don’t realize that olive oil is a relatively delicate substance, however, and store it in all the wrong ways. If you’re storing your bottle of olive oil over by your stove or on top of another heat-generating appliance, for example, you’re already shortening the lifespan of your olive oil.

Storing your olive oil

So, what are the best methods of olive oil storage in Ohio? Here are our best tips for getting the best flavor out of your olive oil selection:

  • Keep away from heat: The rich flavor and texture of olive oil can be damaged if it’s exposed to heat—even the heat that comes from the sun through your kitchen window. That means that it needs to stay away from the stove, microwave, dishwasher, the top of the fridge or anywhere else that might expose the oil to hot temperatures.
  • Store it in a cool, dark place: Direct light damages olive oil, too. In fact, the green in your olive oil comes from chlorophyll, which will undergo chemical changes when exposed to sunlight. Opaque bottles or jars are best for keeping your oil fresh. However, don’t put it in the refrigerator, either—that will cause the oil to solidify.
  • Use it or lose it: Most olive oil has a shelf life of three to six months. Depending on how much olive oil you use, you might want to buy the most expensive oils in small quantities in order to reduce the possibility of not using it in time. When purchasing an olive oil, be sure to look for a “best by” date. If there isn’t one present, you may be dealing with a company that’s selling years-old olive oil. It won’t hurt you—but you also won’t get the same flavor and quality you’d enjoy from a more reputable brand.
  • Seal it tight: Air damages olive oil, as well. That’s why it’s never a great idea to buy an expensive oil and “save it for a special occasion.” Even the air in the sealed container can cause the olive oil to degrade over time. If you’re having trouble using it up, it might be time to host a party, or to split the oil with your friends.

With careful storage, your olive oil will taste great for months—and if you find yourself eating a lot of olive oil-enhanced meals to use it up, take heart in the fact that it’s healthy!
