There are endless ways to cook with olive oil in Ohio, but one of our favorite ways to use olive oil is when making pasta. If you’re looking for a simple spaghetti with olive oil recipe that doesn’t require a lot of time, give this one a try.

Ingredients

Gather all of the ingredients listed below to prepare this delicious spaghetti with garlic and olive oil recipe in Ohio. This recipe is easy and works really well with grilled chicken, steak or seafood. You can also pair it with a fresh salad to lighten the meal.

  • One pound dried spaghetti
  • ½ cup extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Three garlic cloves
  • One tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • ¼ cup chopped fresh parsley
  • One tablespoon chopped basil
  • One tablespoon chopped mint

Method

Follow these steps to make this delectable pasta dish:

  1. Bring six quarts of salted water to a boil in a large pot and add the pasta. Cook the spaghetti as directed on the box for al dente results, usually six to eight minutes.
  2. Before you drain the spaghetti in a colander, set aside two tablespoons of the pasta water to mix into the sauce, so it sticks well to your noodles.
  3. Do not rinse the pasta after draining it. Set it aside.
  4. Add EVOO to a large sauté pan set on medium heat.
  5. Once the EVOO has heated up, add the garlic and sauté it until it’s fragrant and light brown.
  6. Mix in the red pepper flakes and sauté for another minute.
  7. Add cooked pasta to the pan and coat it with the flavored oil.
  8. Pour in the reserved pasta water and stir for a minute.
  9. Remove the pan from the heat and sprinkle fresh herbs on top before serving.

What you should know about cooking with olive oil

Sure, the names are different, but many people don’t realize that cooking with regular or pure olive oil isn’t the same as cooking with EVOO. Pure olive oil has a higher smoke point than EVOO. That means EVOO burns faster than regular olive oil. As you sauté your garlic and red pepper flakes, keep a close eye on the oil to make sure it’s not smoking or burning. This will ruin the flavor of this spaghetti with olive oil recipe.

While you always want to use high-quality olive oil or EVOO when cooking in Ohio, save the more high-end options for cold or uncooked dishes, such as dips, sauces and salad dressings. Also, keep in mind that EVOO has a much stronger olive flavor than regular olive oil due to the cold pressing process.
