Our Favorite Recipes: Blood Orange Olive Oil Cake

April 22, 2021

Every now and then we love to share unique, delicious olive oil recipes, and we found a fantastic new one that we’d love to share with our customers in Ohio and beyond: blood orange olive oil cake.

We’ve found various versions of this recipe all over the internet, from your standard recipe sites to publications like the New York Times, so there are certainly enough people who have tried this cake and loved it.

We strongly recommend trying it as an alternative to a standard birthday cake, or making it to eat alongside a cup of coffee or tea as part of a nice breakfast. Unlike other types of cakes, it ages extremely well, staying good at room temperature for up to four days. This is thanks in large part to the olive oil. The blood orange olive oil combined with the orange juice and orange zest gives it a bright, citrusy flavor and helps to create the golden orange-yellow appearance when it’s cooked.

Here’s the recipe for this delightful olive oil cake—give it a shot in your Ohio kitchen and let us know what you think!

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup melted butter (unsalted)
  • 1-3/4 cup flour
  • 1-1/2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp kosher salt
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 tbsp fresh squeezed orange juice
  • 4 eggs
  • ¾ cup blood orange olive oil
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • Powdered sugar to dust on top

Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees. While the oven is heating up, grease and flour a nine-inch cake pan.

In a bowl, whisk the dry ingredients together and set aside. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, olive oil, orange juice and milk. In a large bowl, cream together the eggs, orange zest and sugar with a hand mixer until it gets to be thick and a pale yellow color (this should take approximately four minutes). Then add in the rest of the ingredients, alternating between dry and wet, beginning and ending with dry.

Ensure the batter is thoroughly mixed after you’ve put all the ingredients in together, and then pour the batter into the cake pan. Place in the oven and bake for 35 minutes. When finished, the surface should appear golden brown.

Transfer to a rack to cool, and once cool, sprinkle powder sugar on top in an amount that you desire.
