Extra Virgil Olive Oil, Inflammation and Your Immune System

May 27, 2021

The Mediterranean diet has been touted as a way to improve overall health, and there’s science to back it up. One of the key parts of this type of diet is olive oil. As it turns out, not only is olive oil delicious, but there may also be protective effects of olive oil on immune-mediated inflammatory responses in Ohio. In short, consumption of olive oil can help combat chronic inflammation in your body.

Scientific study

A scientific study published in 2018 breaks down just how this works. According to the study, eating a Mediterranean diet can “reduce the incidence of certain pathologies related to oxidative stress, chronic inflammation and immune system diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.”

So, by reducing inflammation, a Mediterranean diet can also help reduce the risk of cancer and other ailments. Those other ailments include several inflammation-related maladies, like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease and even neurodegenerative disease.

The study goes on further to single out olive oil as a key factor in our body’s response: “These reductions can be partially attributed to extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) consumption which has been described as a key bioactive food because of its high nutritional quality and its particular composition of fatty acids, vitamins and polyphenols.”

This means that while we often spend our time avoiding fat in foods, in this case it’s actually the fat in olive oil that makes this happen. Extra virgin olive oil has high amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids and moderate amounts of saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Cooking with olive oil

How can you get more olive oil health benefits in your life? Well, the easiest (and most delicious) way is to start incorporating it more into your cooking at home in Ohio.

There are many ways you can incorporate olive oil into your cooking. For starters, you can give food a crispy texture by frying it in some olive oil (just be sure not to fry too hot, as olive oil has a relatively low smoke point). You can also keep meats and veggies juicy and tender by rubbing them with olive oil before hitting the grill or the oven. This also gives a nice browning on the exterior.

Olive oil is also great in salads. Especially if you have farm-fresh veggies, a drizzle of good olive oil and maybe some high-quality balsamic vinegar may be all you need to dress it. And don’t forget the bread, as olive oil is great for dipping. Try this with a rustic country loaf or focaccia and you may never want to eat anything else ever again!
